methylation miracles

Okay, okay -- "miracles" might be a little strong.  ;-)

...However, i can't help but enthuse over the helpfulness of the supplements i've been encouraged to try, in the wake of my 23andMe testing.  The data that company revealed and their analysis of it was interesting, but when entered into Genetic Genie, things got really, REALLY interesting.  And using the latter as a guide to supplement-tweaking via the Yasko and van Konynenburg protocols has given results that are miracu--...

Okay, okay.

YES.  Adding SAMe to my regimen was a really good thing.  Before it, methylcobalamin, the forms of the vitamins in B-Right, and glutathione supplementation were really good, too.  When i get home and start trying phosphatidylserine, i anticipate more good things.

I feel like a more normal person, energy-wise.  The kind of vacation i'm on can be exhausting to me -- lots of walking, lots of sun and wind, lots of stairs in the wrong shoes, more than my usual intake of restaurant food (ie, less liver, red palm oil, and other good stuff, and more things like MSG).  It must be confessed that i am turning in early a LOT.  I'm online at this hour because i was asleep before 10:00.  :-O  But earlier in the day i have much more spring in my step than i did before i started these supplements.

And it's all because my SNPs require these work-arounds!  I -- i, specifically -- need my folate in the form i'm supplementing, because i can't properly metabolize the kind found in whole, real foods.

WHOLE REAL FOODS AREN'T ENOUGH for some of us.

A paleo diet is a terrific diet. a diet FULL of nutritious foods but -- i'll say the words -- some people are broken.  Measurably broken, at the microbiological level.  My genes are BROKEN.  Biochemistry helps to work around the flaws.

  1. I think the mantra "JUST EAT WHOLE FOODS" is one chanted by those who are still metabolically healthy. Once your metabolism is broken, mere abstinence from sugar is not enough. Certain interventions are necessarily.

    I know some Paleo puritans insist that you don't really need coffee when you're eating "clean" because you will have all the energy you need from foods. My opinion? HAHAHAHAHAHA.

  2. Some people also forget that back when we were running around on the savannah, a lot of people died in childhood. Most of those people now live and it's self-evident that many of them aren't as hale and hardy and need the help of supplements, medicine, etc.

  3. I never liked the description of metabolism as being "broken" , probably because it is too widely defined. How did it get broken, what happened? Is it hereditary condition (like in families with many diabetics relatives), an ethnic peculiarity (like in nations without a long exposure to modern diets ), or the result of being on diets too often, too long.

    1. i understand your reservations.... when i look at my genome, though, and see all the mutations which keep my body from performing the way a body is supposed to, i struggle to come up with any better description of the situation.

I think I am from the human breed which is the analog of husky dogs, I could perform very well when endurance is required, but I am not fast enough for ball games,I tolerate cold well, and I need more fat and meat and don't tolerate grains. I experienced no symptoms of a LC flue ever, skipping carbs made me more alive from the very moment I tried it, and most of my health issues became a history. I think when we are good for something, it could be the weakness at the same time for the different mode of living. People who don't see well have a very good hearing. Look at the promoters of safe starches - they didn't feel their best in ketosis, and I believe them. I remember reading that the mutation which makes the African American population more vulnerable to modern diseases provided for their ancestors better survival rates in regions with malaria. May be your genome, Tess, makes your perfect to survive something else like cholera and parasites than modern life.

    3. I never experienced the flu like symptoms either. I felt better the first day after I started Paleo. I'm fortunate to be as healthy as I am considering all the junk I ate not knowing it was bad for me. I really did enjoy whole grain bread but it's just not worth it. We're all on the right track now. I think even if your body is broken you can still be healthy mentally. Remember that the next time you feel depressed about your struggle. Don't give in to the temptation to give up. Sometimes you just have to fake it till you make it.

    4. I like rye bread and miss it too, but being more alive is just very valuable. I also have genetically very bad tolerance for alcohol - I get intoxicated super quickly and it takes me forever to sober up, plus it often feels like something wrong. It wouldn't be a plus in a society where people had a choice to drink hard cider from the moment when they stopped drinking mother's milk or dirty water.

    3. we're all sad that the week is almost over! open sea for another 30 hours or so, and that's it. :-( gonna need a vacation, though, to rest up after our vacation -- isn't that always the way?!

    4. O, I am so sorry for you! Rest after rest is the usual thing, our ski trip to Colorado at the beginning of April left me in the serious need for rest too.
