eating things you can't pronounce

This won't be a rant, but ... why do people say such stoopid things?  We're not all language-impaired.  I can pronounce myriads of things that i wouldn't dream of eating, and avidly consume certain dishes whose names i can't pronounce PROPERLY (because they're quite literally Greek or Norwegian, Chinese or Welsh -- i don't have the SLIGHTEST grasp of those languages...).

Then there are the foodstuffs "with a face" or "with a mother" -- i think these expressions were designed to appall veg*ns.

How about that "eat ... mostly plants" suggestion?  Surely, green leafy vegetables and berries are two classifications of food that EVERYBODY can agree on!  ...Except ... uh ... as Dr. Donaldson pointed out, lettuce is one of the hardest things for the body to digest and green vegetables are very often not well-tolerated by allergics.  And a depressing number of my favorite veggies are goitrogens.  And nightshades can be extremely irritating (goji berries, aka wolfberries, are nightshades -- did you know?).  And strawberry allergies are extremely common (i have a slight sensitivity myself)....

It's very unfashionable to be a raging carnivore these days.  Between the faction that considers us murderers and the one that thinks we should have died of heart disease yesterday, the vast majority of people look down their noses at us.  Damn good thing we also tend to be raging individualists....

  1. Carnivores are cruel because animals don't want to be eaten.

Vegetarians are more cruel because vegetables can't even run away to protect themselves.

    So... fruitarianism FTW?

    2. but ... but ... the fruit's philosophy is that we eat the yummy part and poop out the seeds to help them reproduce, and in return they poison us only minimally. if we modern folks don't poop the seeds anywhere near soil are we guilty of fruit-teasing? fruitus interruptus? hmmm....

the only consumption that seems to be 100% humane is breatharianism. or is it? we breathe in microscopic buggies which get stuck in our mucus membranes' secretions and washed down into our stomach acid where they ... oops.

i'm just willing to strike a deal with Nature: while i'm alive i'll eat you, and any little nibbles you take in return are fair play. after i'm dead -- feast away!

  3. Tess, don't explain and never apologize. Just eat what works for you! If that means only meat or only animal flesh and fats, then do it.

I'm one to talk though as I have problems dealing with all the temptations around me but there is no one in my life who would dare tell me what to eat and what not to eat. I'm blessed!

    1. i only explain, these days, to those who are honestly curious (in a good way) about VLC. every once in awhile, out of the blue, someone actually IS interested! your mention of apologizing flashes me back to that charming quirky movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy".... :-)

  5. Sure, meat and fat taste good, but difficult to overeat unless you add at least vegetables to the mix, fruits work even better. Think duck roasted with sour apples, pork butt roast with garlic and prunes inserted into sluts in the meat, any meat with souse which contains sugar/fructose + salt and vinegar.
Probably, the famous phrase about eating "mostly plants" is the one I find the most annoying. It is the excellent recipe to stretch one's stomach and provoke eating every two hours.

    1. So true! Back when I made my fruit and protein shakes with a banana, some blueberries and a scoop of protein powder, I was hungry enough to eat the wallpaper two hours later.

  6. I feel it my heart that veggies are good and beautiful. I try not to be in a deep ketosis all the time for logical reasons discussed already on Peter's blog and could be found under the index "physiological IR", so I have to choose some source of carbohydrates, and grains, milk and sugar are out of consideration for me.
However, when I think logically, not feel, veggies look not so innocent , even if I put aside reasons mentioned by Tess already. You can eat veggies and especially fruits when you are full and not hungry, many vegetable-based dishes even made with mainly cabbage will prone people to run for second portions, most probably, many people expose themselves to unhealthy chemiials eating vegetables and fruits because It is very expensive to eat organic produce, especially in massive amounts, and very few have productive gardens.

    1. yes, that makes so much sense to me, and experience bears it out, too! as long as i eat only meat i'm fine, but when i add vegetables things can get very complicated and difficult.

  7. "fruitus interruptus" LOL!! Evolution certainly wasn't prepared for that one!
the seeds of all the fruits eaten within any given 50 mile radius probably all end up in the same place :/
