news flash: crossfitters are not "normal"

A certain blogger who shall remain nameless is reading a book i just finished, and so far just DOESN'T LIKE IT.  If this turns around, the blogger assures us, we'll be informed....

Where do i start?  Well, there's a reason she is no longer on my right-hand-column list -- it has to do with egotism.

To be honest, i'm rather disappointed with "Grain Brain" too.  The author doesn't provide much meat on the carcass he serves up, and he's too fond of telling us what exciting things he's planning on communicating LATER which never seem to live up to the promise.  He's probably trying too hard to be accessible to the average reader, and only succeeds in being bland and tepid.

But the biggest gripe the aforementioned blogger has to communicate at this point in her reading is -- Perlmutter suggests most people are best off eating no more than 60 grams of carb per day, and that's just WRONGGGGG!  She needs lots more than that ... and by the way, she's a young mother/professional-woman/crossfitter.

It obviously never occurred to this egocentric idiot that not everybody belongs to her demographic, although she apparently feels that HERS is the only one that really counts.  If you're not a Harvard-trained crossfitter, you obviously don't deserve to live, let alone have a book addressed to improving your health and well-being.

And by the way, she REALLY enjoyed and endorses that new book from "the trust-fund boy."

      i don't read Durant -- i never found any value in his communications. zoo animals aren't optimally healthy? really? i'm so surprised.... and neither are zoo humans? who'd've guessed....

      i HAVE been known to read "her" blog, but it depends on subject matter. when she talks about nutrients and brain function she's okay, but her personal values seem skewed to me.

    4. gee, i must be confused.... i was under the impression that we have a technically longer lifespan these days largely because tiny infections don't become life-threatening. silly me!

      there's a fine line between not getting good soil biota because we soak all our factory-farmed vegetables in stuff that washes off the pesticides, and ACTIVELY COURTING PARASITES.

  2. Narcissist that I am, I had to check if I was still on your list, and then ((whew!!)), I remembered that I haven't read any books. Hmmm let me guess, not that I am convinced that it is not all about me, but I think I know who. Off to do research......And, you have reminded me that I still have my own Permutter post to finish.

    1. [sigh] i remember the day when burning off 60 grams of carb was a piece of cake (no pun intended), but with one thing and another, it's a much bigger strain any more....

  5. I suspect it is not necessary to do cross-fit and be a (sort-of) young mother to be fine on more than 60 grams of carbs. Emily got hypoglycemia from total junk but not from bananas for a breakfast. Some people will have normal blood sugar no mater what they eat regardless of their activity level, I wonder what they credit for their luck.

    No amount of exercise could turn me into a naturally thin person when I tried it in a past.

"normal" people are often completely convinced that it's through some special virtue that they're able to keep their figures and have plenty of energy, not to mention having intelligence and being able to command enough money to be able to attend a top-flight college. if some of us struggle with chronic illness, why, it must be because we're FAULTY! ;-)

  6. Crossfit is extreme but some people thrive on it...I myself like a nice weight workout after a run/walk, all the while being fasted...so no carbs. I have no issues but everyone is a little different. I think some of us lose sight of that fact and htink one size fits all. ;)

    1. the point is, it burns a shitload of glucose, if you're working out like that, OF COURSE you can consume more carbs (or fat, if you prefer ketosis). but they are definitely in a category by themselves. "average" or "normal" or however you want to express it, they are not.

    1. sorry, Jan. i suppose it's a little passive-aggressive of me, but i hate to come straight out and say "Americanpoetessfirstname Andchapter is being a snobby self-centered jerk about a book targeted at people who are educationally below her." ;-) But if you read ancestral-health and headshrinkers' blogs, these hints are probably transparent.... Do you like word games?
